The joyful feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is celebrated during Lent, a period of mourning, during which the celebration of feasts and festivals is forbidden. With the 52nd canon of the Pentecostal Ecumenical Synod, the feast of the Annunciation was allowed as an exception, during which the divine liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and not the function of the Presanctified Gifts.

In Constantinople, according to the custom, on the day of the Annunciation, the emperor in a procession from Hagia Sophia went to the church of St. Constantine in Foro and from there ended up in the church of the Virgin of the Coppersmiths, where a majestic celebration took place.
