According to tradition, the Holy Belt was made by the Virgin herself from camel hair and given to the Apostle Thomas after her Assumption. During the reign of Emperor Arcadius, the Sacred Girdle was moved to Constantinople, where it was placed in a magnificent reliquary that was named "Agia Soros".
After the fall of Constantinople by the crusaders in 1204 AD, some pieces of it were seized and transported to the West. After the recapture of Vasilevoussa by Michael VIII Palaiologos in 1261 AD, a part of the Holy Zone of Most Holy Theotokos was placed in the temple of Blacherna. The largest part of it is kept today in the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos.
The Deposition of the Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary is celebrated by the Orthodox Christian Church on August 31 of each year.
