Η picture of Panagia Zoodochos Source it presents the Virgin Mary in a fountain from which abundant water pours, holding in her arms Christ whom she blesses.

Two angels crown her holding a scroll that reads: "Rejoice that you are kingly throne, rejoice that you burden the one who always burdens". The nickname "Zoodochos Pigi" was first given by Joseph the hymn writer in the 9th century, who composed a hymn to the Virgin Mary.

The Holy Temple of the Living Spring in Polis was erected by the emperor Leo the Thracian or the Great (457 – 474 AD), who as a simple soldier met a blind man outside the Golden Gate of Constantinople.

The blind man asked him for water to drink and Leo looked for a water source in the area but could not find any. Then he heard a voice saying to him: "King Leo, enter deeper into the forest, and after taking with your handfuls this murky water, quench the blind man's thirst and wash his eyes, and then you will know who I am who dwells in the place this". Leo did as the voice told him and the blind man saw his light.

That voice was of Panagia and when Leo became emperor he built a Holy Temple in honor of Panagia, the Life-Giving Spring, on the site of the sanctification.

A second tradition states that the first Temple was built by Justinian at the beginning of the 6th century, seeing in a vision where he was hunting a small chapel and a Priest in front of a spring, telling him that it is the source of miracles. In that place he built a monastery with the materials left over from Agia Sophia.

This Temple in Vasilevousa collapsed in the 15th century. According to testimonies, in 1547 the Temple no longer existed. There was only the consecration. In 1833, Patriarch Constantios I, with the permission of the Sultan, rebuilt the Temple on the ruins of the old one. Thus, on February 2, 1835, Patriarch Constantios, with 12 other High Priests, inaugurated the new Church of Zoodochos Pigi, in Baloukli.
