Saint Nikephoros the Leper Icon 14X20 Gilt Wooden

Father Nikiforos (according to the world Nikolaos Tzanakakis) was born in a mountain village of Chania, in Sirikari.

Kastanochori in the west of the Prefecture with a healthy climate, with beautiful forests, rich waters, gorges and caves.

This village has a peculiarity pWe do not meet it often: it is divided into eleven neighborhoods, which took their name from the families who first lived there.

Thus, our Saint was born in the neighborhood of Kostogiannis.

His parents were simple and pious villagers, who while still a small child died and left him an orphan.

So, at the age of 13, he left home.

His grandfather, who had raised him, took him to Chania to work there in a barber shop to learn the job. Then he showed the first signs of Hansen's disease, ie leprosy.

At that time, lepers were isolated on the island of Spinalonga, because leprosy as a contagious disease was treated with fear and disgust.

When Nikolaos was 16 years old and when the signs of the disease began to become more apparent, in order to avoid his confinement in Spinalonga, he left by a ship for Egypt.

There he worked as a laborer in Alexandria, again in a barber shop, but the signs of the disease became more and more apparent, especially on the hands and face.

That is why, through the mediation of a clergyman, he took refuge in Chios, where there was then a leprosarium, in which Father Anthimos Vagianos, later Agios Anthimos, was a priest (see February 15).

Nicholas arrived in Chios in 1914 AD. at the age of 24 years.

In the leprosarium of Chios, which was a complex with many uniform houses, there was the church of Agios Lazaros, where the miraculous icon of the Virgin of Obedience was kept.

In this space the stage of virtues for Nikolaos was opened. Within 2 years, Saint Anthimos considered him ready for the angelic figure and named him a monk named Nikiforos.

The disease was progressing and evolving and in the absence of appropriate drugs, it caused many and great lesions (the drug was found later in 1947 AD).

Father Nikiforos lived with indiscreet, genuine obedience, with strict fasting, working in the gardens. In fact, he recorded in a list the miracles of Agios Anthimos, which he had seen "by himself" (many concerned the treatments of demon-possessed people).

There was a special spiritual relationship of Agios Anthimos with the monk Nikiforos, who "never took a step away from him", as Father Theoklitos Dionysiatis mentions in his book "Agios Anthimos of Chios".

Father Nikiforos prayed at night for endless hours, making innumerable penances, he had not been accountable to anyone nor did he spoil anyone's heart and he was the main chanter of the church.

Due to his illness, however, he slowly lost his light and so he chanted most of the tropes and recited the Apostles from his chest.

In 1957 AD closed the Lovokomeio of Chios and the remaining patients together with father Nikiforos were sent to the Anti-leprosy Station of Agia Varvara in Athens, in Egaleo.

At that time, Father Nikiforos was about 67 years old. His limbs and eyes were completely damaged and deformed by the disease.

Father Eumenios, who had also contracted Hansen's disease, also lived there at the anti-leprosy station, but was completely cured with the successful medication.

However, he decided to stay the rest of his life in the anti-leprosy station close to his patients, whom he cared for with a lot of love.

Thus he became submissive to Father Nikiforos, to whom the Lord had given him many gifts as a reward for his patience.

Crowds gathered in the humble cell of the leper monk Nikiforos, in Agia Varvara of Egaleo, to receive his wish. Here are some testimonials from those who knew him:

"While he was lying down, with wounds and pain, he did not growl but showed great courage." "He had the gift of comforting the afflicted.

His eyes were constantly irritated, his vision was minimal, he had ankle sprains and paralysis in his lower extremities.

Nevertheless, he was very sweet, gentle, smiling, he told cute incidents, he was pleasant, lovable ".

"His face, which was eaten by the stigmas of sickness and wounds, shone and rejoiced in those who saw this poor and seemingly sick man who said: Let His holy name be glorified."

At the age of 74, on January 4, 1964 AD, Father Nikiforos fell asleep.

After the exhumation, his holy relics smelled.

Father Eumenios and other believers mentioned many cases where miracles were performed by invoking the embassies to God, Father Nikiforos.

A brilliant example and model for all of us, the life of Saint Nikiforos was pleasing to God because he endured a lot.

For this reason we have many testimonies: that our Saint had received from the Holy Spirit the gift of insight as well as many other gifts.

We also need to note that most of the miracles are recorded as to this day the saint gives generous help to anyone in need.

Surely there will be many other wonders that will not have come to the surface.
