Saint Athanasios, who came from Trebizondτa, they came from a very pious and wealthy family.

His family offered him all the necessary supplies for his studies, which he completed in Istanbul.

There was born in his soul the desire to become a monk and to reach the extremes of the ascetic life.

For this very reason, he went to Mount Kyminas in Asia Minor, where there was a monastery whose abbot was Michael, called Maleinos.

Thus, Athanasios was also counted among the monks. In the short time he was in the Monastery, he was distinguished for his virtues and for his ascetic life.

But because he reached the highest points of virtue and was honored by all, he decided to leave and went to Athos to an old ascetic, obeying him with great humility.

Then after a Divine revelation, he left there and went to the interior of Mount Athos.

There, after many pleas from the emperor Nikephoros Phokas, with whom he was acquainted, he built a temple in honor of the Virgin Mary. He also built many cells for the monks.

So after many efforts and sacrifices, he created the holy Monastery of the Great Lavra, which is the oldest monastery on Mount Oros and is honored in the name of Saint Athanasios (963 AD).

Afterwards, he sacrificed himself to the Lord and even in a martyr's way. Specifically, there was a need to renovate the roof of the Monastery. THE

Faithful, although in old age, he also went up together with other brothers of the monastery to do the work.

But the roof collapsed and crushed Osios along with the rest of the brothers.
