Fanuropita, the traditional Asia Minor recipe with 9 ingredients
See what our tradition says about Fanouropita
There are no specific testimonies about the life of Agios Fanourios, whom we honor with this Lenten pie.
According to tradition, the pie is made to save the saint's mother, who was a cruel, sinful woman.
Alexandros Papadiamantis writes on this occasion that whoever invokes Agios Fanourios should always say "God forgive the mother of Agios Fanourios. God forgive her. "
Thus, on the 27th of August, when Agios Fanourios is honored, it is customary for the housewives to make fanouropites, which they distribute in the neighborhood after being first blessed by the church.
Over the years, it has been established that we make fanouropita to find something we lost.
Many, moreover, associate this property of Agios Fanourios and the pie with the name of Agios, which derives from the verb "φαίνω" which means to reveal.
The power attributed to the pie is enhanced by its ingredients, which are always 7 or 9, as these numbers belong to the so-called sacred numbers.
And as is the case with all customs, there are variations of the tradition throughout Greece.
In Crete, Cyprus, Skiathos, Florina and other areas, fanouropita is made for unmarried daughters to find a groom.
Others believe that it brings good luck and illuminates the path of everyone's life.
It is also said that Agios Fanourios protects the farmers by exposing the stolen animals.
Before you start running
Dissolve the soda in the orange juice.
If we have ήnamely the raisins in the refrigerator then you have to put it in water for 4 hours to swell. If you get it fresh you use it directly.
The Materials Needed
Implementation
Beat the oil together with the sugar until the sugar melts as much as possible. In this mixture we add the orange that we have dissolved the soda. Continue beating for 3-4 minutes. (At this stage we use a mixer)
In a bowl we put the flour together with the cloves, the cinnamon, the walnut and the raisin (which we have dried with a tampon so that the flour does not clump when we throw it).
Stir the mixture with a stirrer or a spoon. No need to reuse the mixer.
We have lightly oiled the pan (number 28), because our mixture already has as much oil as needed so that it does not stick and we spread the mixture.
Put the pan in a preheated oven at 160-170 degrees, depending on the oven (baked in both resistance and air) for 40-60 minutes.
Leave the fanouropita to cool and then cut it.
The Wish we read when we make the pie
